WHILE Malaysians may be among the most amorous lovers in the world, with approximately 43 per cent having sex daily (according to a Gallup poll in 2004), an equally high percentage of men and women suffer from sexual dysfunction but are too embarrassed to seek medical help. This was disclosed at a recent two-day “Sexuality in Medicine” conference organised by the Department of Medicine of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, University Putra Malaysia (UPM) which brought together some of Malaysia’s expert clinicians and scientists to speak on how to deal with sexuality in clinical medicine. “Sexuality is one aspect of our patient’s concerns that has traditionally been avoided or only superficially dealt with. “Avoiding or not dealing with sexual dysfunction due to medical or psychiatric illness because of inexperience or shyness prevents us from being the best physicians we can be and our patients do suffer from their ignorance even if they do not voice it out,” said Professor Dr Azhar Md Zain, dean of the faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, who delivered the opening address at the conference.
